Wow…I cannot believe that Barbie is 51 years old today!
Barbie was first introduced in 1959 at the New York Toy Show by Ruth Handler who was co-founder of Mattel. The doll was named after her daughter Barbara. During the first year 351,000 Barbie dolls were sold. The price tag was $3.00. The first Barbie work the famous black and white stripped swim suit and had the ponytail which became a signature.
In 1961 Ken, Barbie’s boyfriend appeared on the scene. Barbie had many careers throughout the years, including the brand new Computer Engineer Barbie. She has had many friends, a number of pets, houses, cars and more.
An original Barbie has sold for as much as $10,000.
Yes, I was a HUGE Barbie fan! In fact, I still have all of my Barbie’s in my attic. My favorite Barbie was from Barbie & the Rockers in about 1986. I don’t remember her name, but she was a redhead. I cut her hair to look like a bob, so she would look more like me. I also loved the accessories, like the dream house, canopy bed, horse, spa that really bubbled, the home/office…the list goes on and on.
What great memories! Maybe I will just have to get in the attic and pull them out. I actually have thought of giving them to my nieces, but I can’t part with them.
