I have always been impressed with the Garland Independent School District. This is not just because of the sheer size of the District that encompasses Garland, Rowlett and Sachse; but the multitude of programs that the offer. I personally began exploring the options available 3 years ago. My son was in first grade and school was too easy for him.
Garland has the Gifted & Talented Program (GT), the Math Science Technology (MST) Program and the Classical Program. Each program has its perks. GT starts in Kindergarten. In order to apply, you must score in the top 90%. MST and Classical start in second grade. For MST, you must score at least 75%. And for Classical, you must score at least 50%.
My son actually could qualify for all of them. We began by visiting each campus and ultimately decided on the MST. We are on our third year and are very pleased.
For the 2010-2011 school year, the Magnet Programs will be expanded to begin at the Kinder garden level. This is an unbelievable opportunity within the Garland Independent School District.
There is an informational meeting at 7:00pm
